Who reports to whom

Org charts from a description, or from the Visio file you already have

Describe the reporting lines in a sentence and the hierarchy is laid out for you — or bring the existing chart and get it back on brand.

Straight answer first: there is no canvas here and nothing to drag. You describe the org chart in a sentence, or bring a file you already have, and it is drawn for you — on your own brand. If you want to place every shape by hand, draw.io is free and better at that. If you have the numbers already, read on.

A screenshot works too — PNG, JPEG or WebP, read by a model rather than parsed. On the paid plans.

Your file is read once to draw the diagram and is never stored. Converting turns on anonymous usage analytics — we never send your file, its contents or your brand URL. What we measure

Try it with this

Paste this into the description box above — it is the example that produces the worked org chart in the gallery.

The CTO has platform and product; platform has infra and API; product has web.

The hierarchy is drawn as a hierarchy, not as a mesh

Sounds trivial; it is where most automatic layouts fail. A generic router sees a child placed further sideways than it is below, decides the edge is horizontal, and sends the line out of the parent's flank and back round — which draws a reporting structure as if it were a network. Here a tree is routed as a tree: the drop is from a parent's underside to a child's top, always.

What comes out

Drawn by this pipeline, not picked to flatter it.

What you get out

SVG and PNG on any plan. PowerPoint with real editable shapes and live text — not a picture of a chart you cannot fix a typo in — plus our own .dgm format, which is plain text you can edit and re-import. Every conversion returns a ledger saying what changed, because you know your own diagram and would notice anyway.

Questions people actually ask

Will it read our existing Visio org chart?
Yes — .vsdx is read directly, including masters and nested groups, and the reporting lines come across with it.
Does it number the boxes?
No. Numbering implies a reading order, and stamping "01" on the CEO says the reader should start there and then go somewhere — a claim an org chart never makes. Flows are numbered; hierarchies are not.
Can we put the whole company in one?
Nothing is dropped however large it gets, but past a few hundred boxes a chart stops being read and starts being searched. One chart per division usually serves better.
