Beyond draw.io

draw.io alternatives, and what to do when the diagram has to be presentable

draw.io is hard to beat on price and control. The usual reason people look elsewhere is not the drawing — it is that the output has to go in front of a client.

Straight answer first: rediagram is not a drop-in draw.io replacement. There is no canvas and no dragging boxes around. It does two things: it writes a diagram from a description, and it converts diagrams you already have — both onto your brand. If you want to draw by hand, pick one of the tools below and use this for everything else.

What draw.io is genuinely good at

draw.io is free, open source, needs no account, runs offline as a desktop app, reads Visio files, and stores diagrams as XML you can keep in version control. For most technical diagramming it is the right default, and "an alternative to draw.io" is usually a question about presentation rather than about drawing.

Where to draw instead

Tool Best for Why
Excalidraw Sketching Free and open source, faster to think in, deliberately rough.
Lucidchart Collaboration and administration Real-time multi-user editing and enterprise controls draw.io does not aim at.
Mermaid Diagrams in the repo Text-based and reviewable in a pull request, rendered natively by GitHub and GitLab.
Visio Deep stencil libraries Still the most complete shape libraries, and the format much enterprise architecture already lives in.

The part the other lists skip

Same content, laid out fresh on a grid and painted in one palette. The source's hand-dragged coordinates and its six pastel fills do not survive, which is the entire point.

Drop a .drawio file and see it on a brand

.dgm · .vsdx · .tldraw · .drawio · .excalidraw · .mermaid
up to 8 MB · nothing is stored

A screenshot works too — PNG, JPEG or WebP, read by a model rather than parsed. On the paid plans.

Questions people actually ask

Does this replace draw.io?
Only for the part where you would rather describe the diagram than draw it. You can write one here from a sentence, or bring what you drew in draw.io — either way it comes out on your brand and exports as editable PowerPoint.
Which draw.io files does it read?
The .drawio and .drawio.xml formats, including the compressed payload that looks like base64 noise when you open the file in an editor.
Can I keep drawing in draw.io afterwards?
Yes. Nothing here modifies your source file. Conversion is one-way and read-only.
